A healthy lawn starts with the right foundation.
Fresh grass is only part of a successful installation. The Box Yard Landscaping prepares the soil, selects suitable base materials, and installs sod with the care your lawn needs to establish.

Careful installation.
Houston Top Dressing is a division of The Box Yard Landscaping. Our experience improving existing lawns also shapes how we install new ones. We address the conditions beneath the grass so your new lawn has a stronger start.
Find the cause first
We review sunlight, existing grass, soil condition, drainage, irrigation coverage, and how you use the lawn. Replacing sod without addressing the reason it failed can lead to the same problems again.
Prepare a clean site
Remove the existing turf and unwanted material as the project requires. We account for roots, sprinkler heads, access, and final lawn height before preparing the soil.
Build a suitable base
We assess compaction and the existing growing layer, then loosen and amend the soil where appropriate. Screened topsoil, compost, or a suitable blend is selected for the site rather than adding the same material to every lawn.
Prepare the finish
Fine grading creates a smooth, firm planting surface with suitable transitions at paths and beds. We maintain the slope needed to move water and identify drainage work that should be completed before sod is installed.
Lay the sod with care
Fresh sod is laid with close joints and staggered seams, then fitted around edges. We establish good contact with the prepared soil and begin watering promptly.
Guide the recovery
We explain initial watering, traffic restrictions, and when to begin mowing. As the sod roots, watering is adjusted to the grass, weather, and soil conditions.
Choose for your lawn.
Plan for how you maintain it.
We help you compare St. Augustine, Zoysia, and Bermuda based on available sunlight, desired appearance, traffic, irrigation, and mowing habits. The variety matters as much as the grass family.
St. Augustine
A familiar choice for Houston lawns with a broad blade and dense coverage. Variety selection and site conditions determine whether it is a suitable fit.
Zoysia
Available in different textures, including fine bladed varieties. We discuss the light, mowing, and establishment requirements of the proposed variety.
Bermuda
Well suited to sunny sites and customers who want a lawn that responds to regular mowing. Closely maintained turf requires a suitable variety and a consistent care routine.
No grass thrives in every location. Deep shade, standing water, and unresolved soil problems should be addressed before committing to a new lawn.
A few useful answers.
Do I need new sod or top dressing?
If there is enough healthy grass to recover, top dressing and targeted preparation may be appropriate. Large bare areas, unsuitable grass, or a lawn that needs extensive soil and grade work may benefit from replacement. We review the condition and your goals before recommending either approach.
Is new sod laid over a layer of sand?
Not as a standard approach. New sod needs a suitable growing base. We assess the existing soil and recommend topsoil, compost, or a blend when needed. Sand used to smooth an established lawn has a different purpose from preparing soil for new grass.
Can you install sod where the old lawn struggled?
Yes, after assessing why it struggled. Shade, compaction, irrigation, and drainage can all affect the result. We explain any preparation or corrective work needed and whether the selected grass suits the location.
When can I use or mow the new lawn?
Keep traffic light while the sod roots. Mowing begins once it is securely rooted and has enough growth to cut safely. We provide instructions for your installation because weather, grass type, and growing conditions affect the timing.
